ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Doreen Koch Allen and Mary Schossow Schumaker are award-winning artists working in multiple mediums. Both have earned Signature Status in Northwest Watercolor Society (NWWS), Women in Watercolor (WIW), and the Peninsula ArtLeague (PAL) — a distinction that reflects years of dedication to their craft. Passionate about sharing what they've learned, Doreen and Mary will walk you through one of their favorite approaches to starting a semi-abstract watercolor landscape.

Description of Program
As artists, we are always exploring — seeking new techniques and
fresh ways to express our creative voice.
Sometimes that inspiration comes from discovering the
work of fellow artists whose vision resonates with our own.
That’s exactly what happened to Doreen Koch Allen and Mary Schossow Schumaker.
While exploring the Nordic Watercolor Society, they were captivated by a
style of semi-abstracted landscapes that beautifully capture atmosphere, light and emotion.
After watching videos and experimenting on their own,
they couldn't wait to share what they discovered!
On September 3rd, at our regular SHA meeting, Doreen and Mary will guide you
through some simple, playful techniques that let watercolor do what it does best —surprise you!
You may find that stepping back and letting the paint have its own voice
is one of the most freeing experiences you've had as an artist!
This is a fun project, a true learning experience, and open to all.
Come join us — you might just discover a new direction for your own work.

BIO - Doreen Koch Allen
Originally from British Columbia, Canada, award- winning artist Doreen Koch Allen is known for her vibrant, intuitive paintings that celebrate color, creativity, and imagination. Working primarily in
watercolor and acrylic, while also exploring pastel and mixed media, she creates expressive works rich in texture, pattern and spontaneity.
Inspired by the beauty of nature and the emotional power of music, Doreen's artwork often reflects a sense of wonder, energy and joy. Her paintings range from whimsical and playful to evocative and contemplative, inviting viewers to discover their own
stories within each piece.
Doreen’s work has been exhibited in numerous regional, national, and international exhibitions, earning her a variety of awards and honors. Her distinctive artistic voice and passion for creative exploration continue to resonate with collectors and art enthusiasts alike.
Now residing in Edgewood, Washington, Doreen lives with her husband and son on a beautiful five-acre old-growth forest property. Surrounded by towering trees, gardens, a flock of chickens, and two beloved Maine Coon cats, she finds daily inspiration in the natural world that surrounds her. Gardening, caring for her animals, and spending time outdoors further nurture her creativity and connection to nature.
She is a Signature Member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Peninsula Art League, Woman in Watercolor and is President of South Hill Artists.

Mary Schossow Schumaker
BIO - Mary Schossow Schumaker
Mary Schossow Schumaker is a watercolor and mixed media artist residing in the Pacific Northwest. Her art represents a formulation of several different stylistic approaches in water mediums and on varied substrates. She has achieved Signature Status with Northwest Watercolor Society, Women in Watercolor and
Peninsula Art League. She is also an active member of South Hill Artists.
In recent years, she has exhibited in many national and international juried shows, and has received numerous awards including Best of Show and People’s Choice. She continues to paint today with her work in continual transition.
Artist Statement
I enjoy the introspective aspect of painting. Sometimes I start with a preconceived idea and
at other times, the mediums take on their own voice and I respond in return. The interplay of
colors, values, shapes, lines and patterns or textures, are my voice to communicate to the
viewer. From prehistoric days to now, painting has been a universal language of communication.
I apparently have a lot to tell the world!

Materials List
WORKSHOP SUPPLY LIST:

Paper: 2 pieces of 11” x 15” watercolor paper (quarter sheets). Either 140 lb. or 300 lb. Cold or hot pressed - your choice.
Note - Please tear the edges of the paper rather than cutting them if you plan to float- mount your finished masterpiece!

Brushes: Large mop brush, 1-2” flat wash brush, medium round (#10-12), rigger brush, 1 old expired full sized credit card, options (stiff scraper or stiff medium sized palette knife)

Paint: Watercolors, your regular palette PLUS tubes of fresh paint from the following suggested list. Please pick Paynes gray plus 2 blues (one must be a cool blue), 2 browns )ex: burnt sienna, sepia and two yellows (ex : raw sienna quinacridone gold).
